Charles Fraser didn't write the book on planned golf communities, just
the first few indelible chapters when he carved the Sea Pines Plantation out of
the pines of Hilton Head Island in the late 1950's. We use the word “carved” in
the most delicate sense, because what made Fraser's development historic was the
care with which his community was laid out to preserve as much of the natural
beauty of the southern end of the island as possible. Sea Pines is widely
considered the first Eco-planned destination in the United States. That
minimalist approach became the island-wide mantra for the east coast's
second-largest barrier island and now home of just over 30,000 year-round
residents. The boom in 21 st -century Hilton Head golf community life has stretched off-island where new communities with a great variety of golf, real estate and architectural options are changing the residential landscape while continuing to preserve much of the Lowcountry charm Charles Fraser envisioned when he changed golf community life a half-century ago. Residents and the nearly 3 million annual visitors co-exist superbly in the knowledge that the support of each allows visits by Broadway touring companies, a resident orchestra and theatre and hundreds of unique shops and restaurants to thrive. |
Hilton Head Plantation is a 5,000 acres private, gated residential community .
Numerous amenities are offered for recreation, dining, and two miles of beaches
and two nature conservancies.
