Hilton Head Golf Communities |
The 42 square-mile island’s other “plantations,” some of which are laid out along the boundaries of original southern plantations, offer golf at 23 courses on-island alone (10 of them private) and an unrivaled variety of views. These vistas are limited not only to fairways and greens, but salt marshes, lagoons, creeks, forests of moss-draped oaks, magnolias and South Carolina’s signature palmettos will stimulate the senses no matter the time of year. Oh yeah, and let us not forget access to 12 miles of sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean or adjacent Port Royal and Calibogue Sounds. The boom in 21st-century Hilton Head golf community life has stretched off-island where new communities with a great variety of golf, real estate and architectural options are changing the residential landscape while continuing to preserve much of the Lowcountry charm Charles Fraser envisioned when he changed golf community life a half-century ago. Like the very best ice cream shops (and there are a few of them here as well), every one of the great golf communities in the Lowcountry has its own identity. Sea Pines is a different flavor from Wexford, which is different from Long Cove and Hilton Head Plantation, Palmetto Dunes and Palmetto Hall, Port Royal and Indigo Run. And the off-island communities all have their unique mix of amenities, of styles. |
